M.E.X.A. Alumni
The Cal Poly M.E.X.A. Alumni Association (CPMAA) is envisioned as an organization of professionals, activists, and community members committed to the self-determination of the Xicano community and the development of social responsibility resulting in positive, measurable change.
The CPMAA recognizes the importance of interdependence as essential to understanding an individual’s responsibility to the greater society and environment.
The CPMAA recognizes education as an essential process for the development of social responsibility and the self-determination of the Xicano community. However, education must be supplemented with knowledge representative of our community’s rich and diverse cultural history. Hence, the CPMAA will draw upon the wisdom, culture, history, and socio-political organization of the indigenous people’s of this continent, as well as lessons from civil and social movements, adapted to a contemporary framework, for guidance and direction. This will constitute the fundamental groundwork to guide our moral, ethical, and professional decisions.
The identity of the organization will be structured by collaboration among members of diverse backgrounds, varied experiences, and multiple professions. It will adhere to the principles of social justice, equity, and critical thought. The CPMAA will invest in preparation for the future through its support of El Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan (The Xicano Student Movement of Aztlan) at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (M.E.X.A de Cal Poly). The CPMAA will serve as a financial, educational, and professional resource in this capacity. In addition, the CPMAA will provide mentorship and support the direction of the organization by participating in functions organized by M.E.X.A de Cal Poly.
The CPMAA will lay the groundwork for the eventual purchase of a housing and community center complex. The complex will offer subsidized housing for Xicano students of financial need and the community center will serve the San Luis Obispo area. In time this structure will financially sustain CP SLO M.E.X.A. As a community center it will offer programs, events, speakers, and musical performances that will foster social, political, and cultural awareness as well as the importance of social responsibility.
For Cal Poly alumni, professionals, and community members, the CPMAA will provide a space for continued learning, personal growth and engagement, and activism well beyond the university environment. It will pool resources and establish a network of professionals to build job opportunities, educational programs, and relationships that will foster lasting bonds resulting in measurable action for the betterment of our communities.
The CPMAA will hold itself accountable to this vision by a careful evaluation and assessment of goals and outcomes.
The vision and goals of the CPMAA include a community of responsible individuals where all learn, teach, and work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect with a commitment to social justice. Our members will have an understanding of the importance of culture, history, and activism, and will develop the skills to become community builders.
